Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why don't you accept insurance?
A: Dealing with insurance companies can be a battle. If I chose to accept insurance, it would require spending countless hours tied up in paperwork and billing. I have chosen instead to devote my time and resources to providing quality services that will benefit my clients more directly.
Q: Why go with a private practice such as Bumblebee Speech?
A: The biggest advantage that I provide is direct, individualized therapy with your child that is provided in a one-on-one setting. In contrast, other clinics in our community may offer therapy that is implemented by an aide such as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). While this can be a good option, I offer the benefit of being a full Speech Language Pathologist with many years of experience and continuous education in the latest evidence-based practices (approaches based on research).
Q: How is this different from what my child may receive in a public school setting?
A: I have the utmost respect for public school SLP’s, and believe they work tirelessly to provide excellent services! Unfortunately, most caseloads are large, and therefore services are likely to be provided in small groups of children with varying needs, with services often implemented by speech aides. As a private practice SLP, I can supplement what your child is receiving in the public schools, greatly increasing the rate of progress. Other significant advantages include direct therapy services to your child in a one-on-one setting, ensuring that your child’s unique needs and communication goals are addressed consistently and regularly.
Q: What if my child did not qualify for speech services in the public school setting?
A: Public schools are bound by California state guidelines for special education when determining who is eligible to receive speech and language therapy services. Some children who may not qualify in a public school may indeed be seen in a private practice setting if a parent has concerns and if it is determined to be appropriate based on assessment results.
Q: What would a typical speech therapy session with you look like?
A: During a typical session, you could expect to see your child participating in age-appropriate activities such as a fun game, and/or a hands-on activity that would target their communication goal(s) being addressed. Multiple opportunities for practicing skills would be provided in a way that is motivating and which provides your child “buy-in” toward future success. A reward system is implemented during each session, and your child can earn points toward prizes from my Treasure Box! At the end of the session, the parent/caregiver is invited to join in for a recap of what was targeted, and suggestions given as to following up at home.
Q: Do you have a favorite approach to speech therapy?
A: I am a huge fan of using children's books! I love a fun storyline, engaging characters, gorgeous illustrations, and the discovery of rich vocabulary words tucked inside. A literacy- based approach is often my favorite vehicle for addressing a variety of communication goals. Books provide the opportunity for language to be learned in the context of a relatable story, and the research supports the resulting successful outcomes.
